West Downey All Star Champions went undefeated (4-0) in the District 29, 7 and 8 year old all-star select tournament this past month.
Hosted by Buena Park American, the district consists of 9 leagues; La Mirada, Metro, Buena Park National, Little Lake, Northwest Downey, La Palma Continental, Norwalk, the host (BPA), and West Downey.
The kids opened up against the top seeded La Mirada team and battled hard for a come from behind win.
With the tying and go ahead run on base in the bottom of the sixth, our second baseman snagged a line drive and doubled-up the runner on third for a game-ending double play, final score 9-8.
Their second win was a 10 run win (10-0) against the Buena Park National team. Their third game was against the host, Buena Park American, team which was another come from behind win.
Down by one in the bottom of the sixth the boys connected with back-to-back-to-back doubles to score 2 runs and pull out another win 11-10.
The final game was versus Metro and they were behind the entire game, but once again the boys came back in the top of the sixth down by 2, they scored 6, and struck out the side in the bottom of the inning for an 8-4 victory. The coach has labeled them the cardiac kids. They really played their hearts out, never giving up, representing the city well, and bringing home the championship.
