Say farewell to the Manzanar tunnel

DOWNEY – After almost a year of waiting, the Manzanar Avenue pedestrian tunnel has been fenced off. The City Council in the summer voted to close the tunnel, but the city had to work with Caltrans to get the job finished.

The gates went up a few weeks ago, residents said.

The idea to close the passage beneath the 5 Freeway was brought up by residents, who said the tunnel was a magnet for taggers, vagrants and criminals, according to the Downey Patriot.
