Mediterranean on the menu for Wednesday’s Planning Commission
DOWNEY – The Planning Commission on Wednesday will decide whether to allow a Mediterranean restaurant to serve wine and beer.
The Green Olive is looking to opena 1,200-square-foot shop at 9234 Lakewood Blvd., which is at the northeast corner of Lakewood and Gallatin Road.
Owner Sam Sarofeem will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, according to the report.
The staff is recommending the Planning Commission approve Sarofeem’s application contingent on several conditions, with the main provision being that the Green Olive sell more food than liquor.
Sarofeem is also listed at operating the nearby Golden Tobacco at 9202 Lakewood Boulevard, according to the Golden Tobacco facebook page.
The site was formerly a Penguin’s frozen yogurt, according the city’s report on the application.
About 160 locations in Downey sell alchohol, according the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control.
That number is slightly above average compared to surrounding cities. Ninety-six are restaurants are bars, and the rest are for off-site consumption, according to the ABC.
South Gate has 120 locations, and 50 of them for on-site consumption at places such as bars and restaurants. Norwalk has 106 locations, and about 45 are for on-site consumption, according to the ABC.
