Two Downey-area freeways make list of nation’s most congested

DOWNEY – The 5 and 605 freeways are among the top 20 most congested freeways in the nation, according to a study released Tuesday by the Texas Transportation Institute.

The southbound  605 Freeway between Beverly Boulevard and Florence Avenue was the fifth most congested stretch of freeway in the country, according to the study.

And the 5 south between downtown Los Angeles and Valley View Street in Buena Park was ranked 18th worst.

Much of the 17.5-mile stretch mentioned in the Institute’s report is scheduled to be widened. The city and Caltrans tonight are hosting an information meeting on the widening.

The study also took into account the amount of man hours and gas wasted on each freeway.

The southbound 5 ranked 9th in total wasted fuel and man hours.

Downey-area freeways show up all over the rankings. The 710 Freeway has some of the worst afternoon commutes.  And the 105 makes the “reliably unreliable” list, which means that drivers cannot be sure how long a trip on the 105 will take.
