DOWNEY – A man was shot to death early Monday morning while riding his bicycle, according to neighbors.
Neighbors said they heard a gunshot and screaming around 3 a.m. and saw a young man bleeding on the ground on Earnshaw Avenue near Prichard Street. The man, who was 19, died at the scene, they said.
Police said they had few clues on the shooting.
“Unfortunately this young man was in such grave condition he needed to be immediately taken to the hospital so our detectives did not get a chance to interview him,” Downey Police Sgt. Alex Irizabal said.
Police do not know if the man, reported to be Genaro Ramirez, was shot from a car or in some sort of dispute.
“As of right now, we have no eyewitnesses,” Irizabal said.
Police were in the neighborhood early Monday loading evidence into a forensics van. A trail of blood marked the sidewalk on Earnshaw. Neighbors said the man was shot around the corner to the east of the area where he died. They described him as a friendly person who was a good barber and gave haircuts to people all over the neighborhood.
The man’s family, who lived nearby, declined to comment other than to say the man died and that they were still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
A man was attacked by four people and beaten with a flower pot on the same block in early October. That attack was almost exactly where the man was killed this morning.
The neighborhood had gang problems in the past, including a fatal shootings. But it has been a quiet year, neighbors said.
One man, who declined to give his name, said his nephew was killed in a gang dispute years ago. He said there is longstanding feud between a gang in his neighborhood and another gang directly to the west.
Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call detectives Jason Klevos or Rolando Renteria at 562-904-2336 or 562-904-4042.
