Six cars were stolen from Downey streets on Tuesday.
Downey has some of the highest rates of car theft in the state, with some 1,000 cars stolen annually, according to police statistics.
On Tuesday, cars were stolen from:
100 block of Stonewood Street at 12:52 a.m.
8500 block of Boyson Street at 5:03 a.m.
8200 block of Puritan street at 5:38 a.m.
12400 block of Old River School Road at 7:46 a.m.
4500 of block Stewart and Gray at 4:15 p.m.
300 block of Stonewood Street at 8:25 p.m.
The police department has taken measures to reduce vehicle thefts and the number of stolen cars, such as bringing in special equipment that recognizes license plate numbers. The number of stolen vehicles has declined from a recent high of 1,231 in 2008 to 927 last year, according to police records.
