Ornelas, 21, was killed with fellow soccer player Eddie Valencia on Saturday after a pickup truck they were riding in rolled over, according to ABC 4, the television news station in Salt Lake City. Former Downey High soccer player Bryant Reyes survived the crash.
According to information from Cerritos College, Ornelas, Valencia and Reyes had just finished up successful careers at the community college and were about to begin classes at Kansas Wesleyan University, a top NAIA team where they planned to continue playing collegiate soccer.
“This is a terrible tragedy and my heart and soul go out to my players’ families,” said Falcon head coach Benny Artiaga in a statement on the Cerritos College website. “Carlos and Eddie will be missed dearly by our entire soccer family. Our current team is in complete disbelief and sadness. These young men had worked really hard to accomplish their scholarships to Kansas Wesleyan. Their parents and teammates were really proud of them.”
The community in Downey is planning events to support Ornelas and Valencias’ families.
