A fiery rollover car crash killed three Downey residents and injured two others.
Sara Flores, 40; Angela Cid-Del Prado, 49; and Vanessa Torres, 17, were killed after being ejected from a Ford Excursion about 10:15 Monday night while they were returning from a church function at the Crystal Cathedral in Santa Ana, according to information from the California Highway Patrol and the Orange County coroner. Two other passengers were injured and taken to the University of Irvine Medical Center, according to officer Gabe Montoya of the California of the Highway Patrol.
The driver of the car lost control while exiting the 5 Freeway at Beach Boulevard in Buena Park, Montoya said. The car flipped over a guard rail, rolled over, and caught fire. Four passengers were ejected from the SUV, Montoya said. The three women were declared dead at the scene. The last passenger was pulled from the fire by a good Samaritan, Montoya said.
The three women who died were killed by blunt-force trauma caused by the crash, said Larry Esslinger, supervising deputy coroner.
Other news outlets reported that a 24-year-old woman died during the crash, but Esslinger said no one of that age was killed in the accident.
